About Dooars

Dooars is the gateway to the Northern Bengal and Bhutan mountain stations. It is popular for its tea gardens, woodland and the Teesta River, and is suitable for nature lovers and explorers. The area is known for its wildlife sanctuaries, in which deer stock, horned rhinos, elephants, guars and reptiles can be found.

Dooars in the Assamese, Bengali, Maithili, Bhojpuri and Magahi languages means ‘gate.’ The hills of Bhutan and the plains of India have 18 passages or gates. This region consists of 880 km2 of Eastern Dooars, the Sankosh River and Western Dooars (340 sq mi). Often referred to as the Bengal Dooars are the Western Dooars and the Eastern Dooars as the Asam Dooars. In northern India as in southern Nepal, Dooars is similar to the Terai.

The Dooars or Duars is found in north-eastern India near Bhutan on the foot of the eastern Himalayas. Duar is the gateway from India to Bhutan and the area forms the gateway. The Bhutanes will communicate with the people living on the plains through 18 passes or gates. The area is separated into East and West Dooars by the Sankosh River. The Western Dooars are called the Bengal Dooars and the Asam Dooars are known as the Eastern Dooars. The word Téra, used in Nepal and in northern India, is synonymous with Dooars, and is India’s single rich nitrate plain.
