The region, which is roughly 165 miles (265 kilometres) north of New Delhi, is bordered on the east by the state of Haryana and on the other sides by the state of Punjab. It is located on the Indo-Gangetic Plain, just southwest of the Siwalik Range (Shiwalik Range), between the Sukhna and Patiali rivers, which are seasonal hill torrents. The area is a flat and rich expanse of alluvial soils where wheat, corn (maize), and rice are grown in rural farming.

Temperatures in the summer (April to June) can reach above 120 degrees Fahrenheit (about 50 degrees Celsius), while temperatures in the winter (November to February) can drop to the mid-30s Fahrenheit (about 2 degrees Celsius), with regular rain storms. It is hot and humid during the monsoon season (July to September).
