Sultanpur, Uttar Prdesh
Sultanpur is a town and city council in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in Sultanpur District. Sultanpur is the administrative seat of the District of Sultanpur and belongs to the Faizabad Division, located near the right banks of Gomti. It is 135 km east of Lucknow, the state capital.
On the left bank of the Gomti River was the first city. It is claimed that Kusa, Rama’s son, was created and Kusapura, or Kusabhavanpur, was named after him. General Cunnigham connected this old city with the Kusapur referred to the Chinese explorer Hiuentsang.
A clock tower is located at Chowk. Sitakund is on the banks of Gomti where Sita washed when her husband (Lord Rama) escorted her on her exile. Chaitra and Kartika hold bathing fairs. The church called Christ Church, opened and dedicated on 16 November 1869 is located on the civil line opposite the collectorate. Victoria Manzil, constructed to commemorate Queen Victoria’s first jubilee, sits next door to the church on the south side. The office of the Municipal Board is now called Sunder Lal’s Memorial Hall. In 1954-55, the city erected a stadium called Pant Stadium.
