Kotagiri is a small Hill Station in the district of Nilgiris, Tamilnadu, and is one of the most popular places to visited in Ooty at 29 km from Ooty, 20 km from Coonoor, 72 km from Coimbatore and 544 km from Chennai. That is 1793 m above sea level. This is Nilgiris after Ooty and Coonoor’s oldest and third largest hill stations. The Kotagiri name simply refers to the Kotas mountains and the Kota tribe that once existed. It is one of the best places to visit in Ooty.
Kotagiri was the first British village in the Nilgiris and was a favorite summer retreat before Mettupalayam and Coonoor constructed a road. Two officials of the Government of Madras in search of outlaws discovered the area. You named the Kotacherry area. John Sullivan, Coimbatore’s then collector, visited Kotagiri and was so pleased that he built a home that he was the first European to live there.
Kotagiri is renowned for its stunning scenery. In 1843 the first coffee plant was planted here and several other plantations were followed. In the late 19th century, however, the first tea plantation of the MDCockburn’s daughter began to take over coffee steadily until it spanned the region entirely. Today, a total of 30 000 hectares of tea plants are in Kotagiri.
