JHALRAPATAN (6 KMS.)

Jhalrapatan, also known as the City of Bells, is an old walled town constructed in 1796 A.D. by Jhala Zalim Singh. It is located in the same area where the ancient town of Chandrawati was constructed by Parmar Raja Chandrasen and afterwards destroyed by invaders. As Jhalrapatan happened to be one of the caravan route’s junctions, the entire town resided behind the limits of a wall to safeguard trade caravans from Pindaris. Jhalrapatan’s pride is the 10th century Sun Temple (Padma Nabh Temple). It is one of the outstanding examples of temple architecture, complete with beautiful sculptures. Lord Vishnu’s idol may be found inside the temple. Another temple, Shantinath Jain Temple, was constructed in the 11th century and is noted for its sculptures and other monuments. Another significant temple in this town is the Shri Dwarkadhish temple, which was established in 1796 A.D. by Raja Zalim Singh. At the “Herbal Garden,” close to this temple, you may see a large variety of herbal plants. The Navlakha fort, which is located on the Jhalawar-Jhalrapatan route, is also worth a visit.

The Chandramoulishwar Mahadeo temple provides a great insight into temple architecture of that era. The carved pillars, arched gateways and exquisite workmanship make these temples look outstanding.

GAGRON FORT (14 KMS.)

Out of the nine ‘Durgs’ (forts) mentioned in the Shastras, it is an example of a ‘Jal Durg,’ or Water Fort (the ancient sculptures). The foundation of this formidable and magnificent fort was erected in the seventh century. It is bordered on three sides by the waters of the Ahu and Kali Sindh rivers, and its ramparts provide a spectacular perspective. Outside the fort lies a Sufi Saint Mitheshah’s Durgah, where an annual fair is conducted during the Islamic month of Moharram. A monastery dedicated to Saint Pipa, a contemporary of Saint Kabir, is located nearby.
