Shopian or Shupiyan, also known as Shupyan in Kashmiri, is an administrative division of the Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir, India, located in the southern portion of the Kashmir Valley. Shopian is an old town in Kashmir that, among other things, has historical significance since it is located on the ancient imperial road known as the Mughal Road. Imam Shahi Hamadan had the honour of entering the Kashmir valley through Shopian to propagate the word of Islam.

Peer Kigali

The Pir Panjal Pass, also known as Peer Ki Gali (or Peer Gali), is a mountain pass and tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pir Panjal Range. The ‘Mughal Road’ links the Kashmir Valley to the districts of Rajouri and Poonch. At 3,490 m (11,450 ft), it is the highest point on the Mughal route and is located to the south-west of the Kashmir valley.

Aharbal Waterfall

It is also known as the “Niagara Falls of Kashmir” and is a hill station in the south-western section of Kashmir Valley in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, south of Srinagar, the summer capital. The area is serene and ideal for adventures, walking, photography, and fishing. The waterfall draws many Indian and foreign tourists due to its mesmerising appearance of meadows, pine and fir tree woods, and the bordering snow-clad mountains.

Mughal Road

The Mughal Road, a historical route that runs across the Peer Panchal Ranges, holds a lot of significance. The Mughal Emperors, after whom the road is called, used to go via the apple town of Shopian on their way to the valley. A sarai (stopping area) at Shadmarag still bears testament to the majesty of Mughal carvans going via this road.

Kousarnag

The kousarnag lake is located in the Pir Panchal range, 4000 metres above sea level, south of Shopian. It is roughly 5 kilometres long and 3 kilometres broad, and it is the headwaters of the Vishav River. It is 34 kilometres away from Shopian. Its flowing blue water mirrors the steep snowy hills that surround the spring.

Buses from Jammu’s bus station can take you to this location. Buses and taxis are accessible from the Poloview stop in Srinagar to go to this location.
