The fort of Jalore is perched on a steep and vertical hill. It commands the town from a 336m high rocky outcrop built with a wall and bastions with artillery mounted on them. The fort features four massive gates, but it is only accessible from one side, following a two-mile serpentine ascent.

The approach to the fort is from the north, up a steep, slick road through three rows of fortifications to a single 6.1m high rampart wall. Climbing up takes one hour. The fort is constructed in the style of traditional Hindu architecture.
