Chaurasi Gumbad

Chaurasi Gumbad (84 domes) is a nine-domed square edifice in a walled courtyard with two burials beneath the centre dome. This gumbad was most likely made in the late 15th or early 16th century. This Islamic edifice is thought to be a mausoleum of a Lodi Sultan. It has 84 doorways. Built of rubble blocks, the entire structure is split into square areas like a checkerboard by eight lines of pillars connected by arches and topped by a flat roof. The structure has a 60-foot-high dome. Jaunpuri motifs can be spotted on the Gumbad’s wall. It is located west of historic Kalpi, along NH 25, towards Orai.

This structure is a Medieval royal tomb (of Lodhi Sultans). Kalpi was known as Kalpriya Nagari in ancient times. With the passage of time, the city’s name was shortened to Kalpi. Kalpriyanagari is a historic Indian city. It had a sun temple the size of a football field, if not greater. King Vasudeva founded Kalpi in the fourth century. The settlement is claimed to be guarded by the Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.
